Fixed costs are recurring commitments that are relatively predictable, such as rent, insurance or a loan payment. Variable costs change more directly with day-to-day choices or usage, such as groceries, fuel and leisure spending. The boundary is not always absolute: an energy bill recurs every month but can still change with consumption and prices.
